- New route for 2027 -

The Coquet Valley Challenge Walk is a stunning 14-mile circular route starting and finishing in the heart of Rothbury, one of Northumberland's most picturesque market towns.

With approximately 2,200 feet (671m) of ascent, the route showcases everything that makes the Coquet Valley so special. You'll follow quiet countryside tracks, woodland paths and open hillside trails, enjoying ever-changing views across some of Northumberland's finest landscapes.

Rothbury to Checkpoint 1

After registration in Rothbury, you will leave the village behind and head north onto Addycombe Hill before joining the historic Carriageway Drive.

Passing just north-west of Primrose Cottage, the route climbs towards Crocky's Heugh before following a lovely wide track down towards Blue Mill and Black Chirnells.

From here, a short descent brings you into Thropton, where you cross the River Coquet before making your way to Checkpoint 1 at Tosson Lime Kiln (6.5 miles).

Simonside and Checkpoint 2

Leaving the checkpoint behind, the challenge steps up a gear as you climb steadily onto the iconic Simonside Hills.

Reaching the summit of Simonside, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views across the Coquet Valley, Rothbury and the Cheviot Hills stretching away to the north. On a clear day, the views stretch for miles, making this one of the true highlights of the challenge.

After crossing Old Stell Crag, Dove Crag and The Beacon, you descend to Checkpoint 2 at Lordenshaws.

The Final Miles

The final section follows the famous St Oswald's Way towards Whitton before joining the disused Rothbury Branch Line for a gentle finish back into Rothbury, where a warm welcome, your medal and the satisfaction of completing the challenge await.

The finish line is located at the home of Shepherd's Walks and GPS Training, giving participants the opportunity to meet Jon and the team who organise the event.

Friends and family can follow your progress throughout the day using our live timing system, adding an extra level of excitement and support as you make your way around the route.

This circular route has been carefully chosen to provide a rewarding challenge for regular walkers without being overly technical or intimidating.

With fully supported checkpoints, friendly Shepherd's Walks marshals, live timing and a welcoming finish-line atmosphere in Rothbury, the event is designed to be as enjoyable as it is challenging.
