Puffins, Terns and Maybe Orcas: Summer Wildlife on a Northumberland Coast

Wildlife You'll Remember as Much as the Miles

When people think about UK walking events, they often picture the miles, the finish line and the sense of achievement that comes from completing a challenge.

Here in Northumberland, there's another reason to lace up your boots.

Summer transforms our coastline into one of Britain's greatest wildlife spectacles. Every beach, headland and rocky outcrop comes alive with thousands of seabirds. Puffins return to raise their young, terns fill the skies with their unmistakable calls, and if you're exceptionally lucky, you might even spot one of the ocean's most magnificent predators cruising offshore.

One thing's for certain. You'll remember the wildlife just as much as the miles.

Northumberland Comes Alive in Summer

June and July are magical months to explore the Northumberland coast.

The beaches are bursting with birdlife, the Farne Islands are at their busiest, wildflowers colour the dunes, and the North Sea often feels surprisingly calm on sunny mornings.

Whether you're taking part in one of our UK walking events or simply enjoying a day on the coast, there is always something happening around you.

So, slow your pace every now and then.

Look up.

Listen.

Nature has a habit of rewarding those who take a moment to notice.

Puffins: The Stars of the Show

Few birds capture people's imagination quite like the puffin.

With their colourful beaks, bright orange feet and slightly comical appearance, they're often the wildlife highlight of any visit to Northumberland.

Every spring they return to the Farne Islands, where they nest in burrows overlooking the sea before heading back into the open ocean once their chicks, affectionately known as pufflings, have fledged.

The best time to see them is from April until late July, with June and early July usually offering the busiest colonies.

Although our coastal challenge walks don't take you onto the Farne Islands themselves, you'll walk through villages such as Seahouses, Beadnell and Bamburgh, where the islands dominate the horizon and wildlife boat trips depart throughout the day.

Even from the mainland, it's not unusual to spot puffins flying low across the waves carrying beaks full of sand eels back to their hungry chicks.

💡 Did You Know?

Every summer, National Trust rangers carry out detailed puffin surveys on the Farne Islands, monitoring thousands of nesting burrows to understand how the colony is changing and to help protect one of Britain's most important seabird populations.

Terns, Guillemots and the Rest of the Coastal Cast

The puffins may steal the headlines, but they're certainly not performing on their own.

Keep your eyes open for:

  • Arctic Terns and Little Terns nesting on the beaches around Long Nanny and Beadnell. Please respect the roped-off nesting areas, as these remarkable birds have travelled thousands of miles from Antarctica to breed here.

  • Guillemots and Razorbills, packed shoulder-to-shoulder on dramatic cliff ledges.

  • Eider Ducks, affectionately known by locals as "Cuddy's Ducks", named after St Cuthbert, whose close connection with the Farne Islands lives on to this day.

Walk the coast on a still summer morning and you'll hear the seabird colonies long before you see them.

It's a soundtrack that simply can't be recreated.

And Maybe... Just Maybe... Orcas

Now for the wildlife sighting that really stops walkers in their tracks.

On 15 June 2026, a pod of orcas was spotted off the Farne Islands, delighting passengers aboard a local wildlife tour boat as the animals circled the vessel before disappearing back into the North Sea.

It was another exciting reminder that these magnificent marine mammals are becoming increasingly regular visitors to the Northumberland coastline during late spring and early summer.

You can read more about the sighting here.

Sightings from the shoreline are still rare and can never be guaranteed.

But that's all part of the excitement.

As you pause on a headland to catch your breath, spend a few moments scanning the horizon.

You never know what might appear.

Local Tip: Early mornings and calm seas offer the best chance of spotting wildlife offshore. Pack a lightweight pair of binoculars and spend a few minutes watching the sea from headlands such as Dunstanburgh Castle or Bamburgh Castle.

Walking at Nature's Pace

One of the joys of walking is that you're moving slowly enough to notice the little things.

You hear the terns before you see them.

A puffin suddenly flashes across the waves with a beak full of fish.

A curious seal pops its head above the surface just offshore.

You stop for a drink and find yourself watching dolphins playing beyond the breakers.

These are the moments that stay with you long after the finish medal has been put away.

Unlike travelling by car, walking allows you to become part of the landscape rather than simply passing through it.
