Making it simpler to choose the right Shepherds Walks day walk

Booking a guided walk should feel exciting, not confusing. Over the years we have spoken to many walkers who love the idea of joining a group walk, but feel unsure whether a particular route will be too easy, too hard, or simply not quite right for them.

We have listened to that, and that is why we have made it much clearer and simpler to understand how our day walks are graded.

At Shepherds Walks, we welcome everyone, from first time walkers to seasoned hillgoers. What matters to us is that you choose a walk that suits you, so you can enjoy the day, rather than worry about whether you will keep up or find it too much.

To make this easier, every guided walk is now clearly graded as Easy, Moderate or Difficult. These grades are based on three straightforward things distance, terrain and the amount of climbing you are likely to encounter.

We see this grading as a helpful guide, not a test of your ability. If you are ever unsure which walk is right for you, we are always very happy to talk it through and offer honest advice.

So what do the grades actually mean?

Grade 1 Easy walks are ideal if you are new to walking or simply want a relaxed day out with like minded people. These routes mainly follow good paths with gentle climbs and are usually up to around six miles. They are a wonderful way to take in Northumberland’s landscapes at a comfortable pace, without feeling rushed or stretched.

Grade 2 Moderate walks suit regular walkers who enjoy a bit more challenge. You can expect more varied terrain, some steeper sections and a more energetic day. These walks typically cover between six and 13 miles and offer a satisfying balance between effort and scenery. In my opinion, this is where many people find their perfect sweet spot.

Grade 3 Difficult walks are for experienced walkers who are happy tackling bigger hills and rougher ground. These routes may include significant climbs, more remote sections and longer distances. They are demanding, but incredibly rewarding for those who are well prepared and looking for a proper challenge.

Ultimately, our aim is simple. We want to make it easier for you to choose a walk with confidence, so you can focus on enjoying your day rather than second guessing your decision.
