Hen Hole and B17 Wreck

Sunday saw guide, Chris leading a group of 13 walkers on one of his favourite routes in the Cheviots.  

They headed up the spectacular Hen Hole before making the steep climb to Auchope Cairn, then crossed the high plateau to the summit of The Cheviot.

From there, they struck out across the featureless moorland to the B-17 Flying Fortress crash site on West Hill, near Braydon Crag.

It was a demanding day from the outset, with persistent rain, strong winds and cloud sitting firmly on the tops. Visibility was so poor that even with the route well known to Chris, finding the wreckage took a little longer than usual. A reminder that the Cheviots can still command your full respect, no matter how familiar the terrain.

Once everyone had gathered at the wreckage, Chris shared the story of the tragic night in 1944 when the American bomber crashed, claiming the lives of two crew members.

We also reflected on the remarkable rescue effort that followed, which saw local shepherds and Sheila the sheepdog play a vital role in saving the surviving airmen-an act of courage that was later recognised with medals.

Although the weather meant we missed the magnificent views this route normally offers, the group tackled the challenging conditions with great determination. It was certainly a tough day on the hill, and several walkers dug deep to reach the finish.

Despite the rain and mist, there was a real sense of achievement at the end of the walk, and hopefully everyone went home with a memorable story to tell... along with a renewed appreciation for just how wild and unforgiving the Cheviots can be.
