Hawkhope car park (NY 708883), situated at the northern end of Kielder dam. You access the car park by driving along the top of the dam, which is a great experience to start with. It is a pay and display car park with toilets present.
Get away from the crowds at Kielder and discover the harsh Northeast shore. This walk combines the little walked shoreline that treats you to some spectacular views of the largest man made lake in Northern Europe.
As this stretch is so inaccessible I guarantee a quiet walk with a sense of isolation which is quite unique.
You then return via the broad forest tracks that have plenty of interesting points to view on the way.
The route is very well waymarked, but walking boots are essential. The stretch following the shoreline is rough and also can be wet in places if there has been a lot of rain. Don’t let this put you off though as the challenge is well worth it.
- DR wrote, 'As you said this was a difficult route and we all found it to be rather strenuous, even though there was no ascent. We also saw a grass snake on the path - it had beautiful markings - it was green with black stripes. One of our party was absolutely terrified. It was a lovely walk and we didn't meet a soul all day'.
- Suitable for people with dogs, as does not pass through any farmland.
- AH wrote “I was introduced to the Kielder walk last Monday. The weather and views were superb. However don't under estimate the walk, as it is more difficult due to the conditions underfoot than anticipated from looking at the map. Based on the walk, I have sent for some of the others. Keep up the good work. Look forward to receiving the walks”.
