Walk 02 - Cragside Cariageway Walk

Rothbury. Cowhaugh car park ( Nu 057015) situated next to river Coquet. If you are entering Rothbury on the B6342 from the South (Cambo direction), turn left just before you cross the bridge as you approach Rothbury village centre.
This is a pleasant walk, which gives beautiful views of Rothbury and the surrounding hills. The walk begins in Rothbury and follows the old carriageway of Cragside Estate, the famous home of Sir William Armstrong.
The walk climbs to a height of 249 metres and looks down on Rothbury, with the Cheviots and Simonside in the distance.
Cragside Estate, once the home of Lord Armstrong, is well worth a visit and is accessible from this walk. However, the estate itself offers woodland and garden walks, plus Cragside house is open for viewing, so combining the Carriageway Walk and Estate visit is not advisable.

- This walk guide contains route data which can be used in conjunction with your own GPS.
- JF wrote, 'Very impressed with the instructions, which ensured that we were able to concentrate on enjoying the walk without having to worry about which direction we should be heading in’.
