Walk 60 - Ruskin’s View, Kirkby Lonsdale

Devil’s Bridge, just off the A65 (Grid reference SD618783). Leave the M6 at junction 36. Drive East along the A65. Do not take the road heading into Kirkby Lonsdale, but just after crossing the River Lune take the first left (signposted A683, Casterton, Barbon, Sedburgh and Holme Open Farm). Then take the first right into the car park, which is just a lane with cars angle parked down the left hand side.

This delightful short walk starts off at the spectacular Devil’s Bridge, before you follow the picturesque River Lune. After a short while you climb up to the wonderful viewpoint of Ruskin’s View, which was described by John Ruskin in 1875 as ‘one of the loveliest views in England, therefore in the world’. The view was also painted by Turner in 1822.

You then walk up through some lovely woodland and traditional farmland up to Home Farm, which has an ideally situated Old Forge Tea and Coffee house. You then return back to the market town of Kirkby Lonsdale which gives you a good opportunity to visit St Mary’s the Virgin Church on the way, which dates back to 1705.

From here it is a short stroll back to your car on a wonderful traffic free lane.

- This walk guide contains route data which can be used in conjunction with your own GPS.

- The walk is suitable for most levels of fitness and is ideal for children, with plenty of things for them to explore en-route and if the weather is nice you may even be able to treat them to a little paddle in the River Lune around Devil’s Bridge at the end of the walk.
